September 2009

Paradigm Shift Technologies Inc. successfully completes the Advanced Gun Barrel Technology Program (AGBT) with the demonstration of the coated 155-mm gun barrel installed in the AGS EDM 155-mm gun mount at Dugway Proving Grounds, Utah. This demonstration was a series of rapid fire tests, proving that the refractory metal lining EPVD®-applied inside the barrel has significant wear resistance over existing hard chrome plating. The proprietary coating system developed by Paradigm Shift Technologies reduces the exposure of the substrate to both thermal and chemical attack, significantly extending the service life of the barrel. The thermally induced cracking, that signals the beginning of the end for the hard chrome plating, is virtually eliminated leading to longer service life and fewer barrels being required over the life of the gun system. The series of rapid fire tests conducted on September 17th was the culmination of AGBT, a 5 year Future Naval Capabilities (FNC) Program, a collaborative effort of the Office of Naval Research, Navy Warfare Centers, and defense industry.                 http://www.navy.mil/search/display.asp?story_id=48730
